Welcome to the Quality Improvement for Pharmacy Development Website
Delivering on quality is everyone's business.

Around three million people are employed in delivering health and social care services and every day millions of people have access to good quality health and social care. Skilled practitioners, high quality care providers and well developed organisations and teams provide more than 600 million contacts with patients per year, many of these with primary care practitioners. Community pharmacy has around 1.8 million visits / day for health-related topics.

For those whose job it is to deliver and develop health and care services, quality encompasses equality of services for all, efficiency and affordability and the ability to innovate, develop new ways of delivering care and contribute to the overall health and well being of the population. Pharmacy has a major role to play as often they are the first point of contact with the NHS by members of the public.

Pharmacists are accountable for the quality and standards of the services they provide within pharmacies or pharmacy departments, and for their individual professional practice.

Delivery of high quality services will depend on individual professionals as they go about their daily work, on teams as they commit to supporting their colleagues, on providers and commissioning organisations as they develop services, on national bodies to provide the support and guidance and to encourage sharing of learning and best practice and most importantly on those that use health and social care services to ensure their voice is heard and that we can all work together to truly deliver the vision for quality.

This is a time of great opportunity for pharmacists working in primary and secondary care settings. With more care being delivered locally to patients and the development of professional roles, pharmacists have the chance to become even more involved in delivering high quality patient care. Enhanced service delivery, medicine use reviews, pharmacist-led clinics and the development of prescribing roles for pharmacists mean that for many their roles and responsibilities are changing. It is essential that as these services are developed pharmacists are supported by clinical governance frameworks that will support delivery of high quality care.
